Every so often a game enters the scene propelled by so much hype and promising so many innovations that decorating it with more pretty words seems pointless. Donkey Kong 64 falls into this category.Donkey Kong 64 is a 3-D action adventure game--à la Super Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie--based on the game icon of the same name (you know, the ape who rolled barrels down on Mario's head in the early 1980s arcades).In this massive and graphically beautiful game, Donkey Kong and his pals must right the wrongs of King K. Rool by exploring their home island in search of more than 200 gold bananas, as well as other items that help the primates' progress.Players alternate control of Donkey Kong and four other characters--each with unique abilities--to complete puzzles, conquer "baddies", compete in mini-games and navigate through physical challenges. In addition to the single-player adventure, unique multiplayer games offer opportunities for social interaction between marathon solo sessions.Donkey Kong 64's incredible graphics and smooth gameplay are boosted by an included 4-MB expansion pack. Let's just for a second forget that Star Wars: Episode I, Racer has anything at all to do with the film on which it's based. Would it still have any appeal if you take away the movie license? The answer, almost surprisingly, is yes. This sci-fi arcade racing game is packed with high-speed thrills and a unique style of track-circling action that should get any racing fan's adrenaline pumping. The game is based on the pod-racing scene from Episode I, which was arguably the best and most exciting segment of the film. Players enter a series of pod races as either Anakin Skywalker or one of his 20 different alien rivals--including Sebulba, once you get far enough into the game to unlock this bonus character. Races are linked in four different circuits, each more difficult than the last. The highest circuit, in fact, can be extremely tough. Each race is a white-knuckled ride on the wild side, as the game does an excellent job of conveying a feeling of ferocious speed. It helps that Racer utilises spectacular 3-D graphics to depict the racetracks and their alien surroundings. But racers can't waste time admiring the scenery: tracks are not always well marked, and it's all too easy to get lost and fly off the track. As with most Star Wars games, the sound effects and music in Racer are top-notch. True, Anakin's cutesy voice can be annoying at times, but the other racers sound great when they complain as you pass them on the track. Watto the shopkeeper, the floating alien guy who sells new parts and upgrades for your pod, is a great character who chatters away humorously as you shop his store. Overall, Racer is a game that can easily stand on its own merits rather than ride the coattails of Star Wars: Episode I. Intense speed, unique racing action, and excellent 3-D graphics make this one a sure-fire winner. --Michael E. The annoying little red-crested breegull Kazooie is back in action in Banjo-Tooie and sporting a host of more than 40 new abilities, including Claw Clamber Boots, Breegull Blaster, Bill Drill and the wacky Clockwork Kazooie Eggs. It's a good thing, because you'll need all the firepower you can muster as they confront the 10 new, huge end bosses. Banjo the bear is alive and kicking, too, with some awesome enhancements and new abilities. Also, Mumbo Jumbo the shaman makes an appearance with his amazing bag of spells. He's even a playable character in some levels. It will come as no surprise to gamers that Gruntilda the witch is once again up to no good, spreading her bad breath and venom across eight new worlds. Aside from the returning cast, gamers will be introduced to more than 125 new characters. In this sequel, Banjo has the ability to get Kazooie off of his back... literally. The dynamic duo of Banjo and Kazooie must separate in order to solve the many puzzles and overcome obstacles that will confront them in this game. Both of them can also transform into different creatures, each with specific abilities that allow them to perform special tasks, which would otherwise be impossible for them to execute in their native forms. Banjo, for example, can turn into a washing machine or a submarine, but still maintains the familiar yellow shorts and blue backpack that gamers have become accustomed to him wearing. The gameplay has more of a cinematic approach this time around--there's support for widescreen and surround-sound--and the camera system has been tweaked to provide better shots of the action. What's more, Banjo-Tooie is loaded with 10 multiplayer games that will accommodate--get this--four players. As with just about anything brandishing the Pokémon name, Pokémon Stadium is a must-have for any Pokémaniac. But this title is especially geared towards owners of Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue, or Pokémon Yellow, for the Game Boy. Using the same battle system as the Game Boy games--think highly advanced paper-scissors-stone-Pokémon Stadium allows players to enter their Pokémon in a variety of tournaments and other battle modes, all featuring vibrant 3-D graphics and animation, as well as enhanced sounds and announcer commentary. Using the included Transfer Pak, players can use their own Pokémon from Game Boy Game Paks, or they can choose from a pool of rental Pokémon. Pokémon Stadium isn't all battles, though. The Kids Club mode features nine cutesy mini-games that make for great multiplayer fun for all ages. Gallery mode lets players take snapshots of Pokémon (similar to Pokémon Snap), which can then be printed out as stickers at your local Pokémon Snap station. While Pokémon Stadium doesn't require that you already have any Game Boy version of Pokémon, players won't be able to access two of the best features of the game without one. Pokémon Lab allows players to view, store, and better organise the data on their Game Paks, as well as trade Pokémon with another player (which requires an additional Transfer Pak, sold separately). Whether you're one of the millions of Turok series fans or just a fan of multiplayer death matches, Turok: Rage Wars blends the two favourites into a first-person shooter fan's dream game. All of the Turok games' solid level design, inspired baddies and engrossing gameplay elements are here, with new weapons, power-ups and incredibly smart bots (computer opponents). The only difference is, this game is a pure action free-for-all in which good aim and fast feet are the keys to success. Rage Wars offers a variety of opponent and map options. Play with up to four other humans or a combination of humans and bots on over 36 maps. Don't worry about identifying the bots as the buggy opponents running in place in a corner with guns blazing at the floor--Rage War's computerised gunners are perhaps smarter than the flesh and bones variety of opponent. The arsenal of weapons range from the familiar to the entirely unique. Turok favourites include the crossbow, mag pistol, flare gun and scorpion launcher.
